€40M Hyatt five-star hotel approved at Macenas Mediterranean Resort in Mojácar
The Ayuntamiento de Mojácar has granted the construction licence for a new five-star hotel at Macenas Mediterranean Resort, marking one of the most significant tourism investment projects currently underway on the Levante Almeriense coast.
The hotel is being developed by the family office of the Cosentino family, founders of the global surfaces company Cosentino, and will operate under the international hospitality brand Destination by Hyatt. The project represents an investment of more than €40 million and is expected to open its doors in 2028.
For Mojácar and the wider eastern Almeria region, the approval is a notable milestone for a resort development that has been gradually revived after years of stalled progress following Spain’s financial crisis.
A 143-room hotel designed for the Mediterranean coastline
The planned hotel will include 143 rooms and has been designed by the architecture studio GCA Architects. According to the project documentation, the design focuses on Mediterranean architectural principles, landscape integration and a lower visual impact on the surrounding coastal environment.
The developers aim to obtain BREEAM certification, an international sustainability standard for buildings. Achieving this certification would require the use of lower-impact construction materials, improved energy efficiency systems and responsible water management — factors that have become increasingly relevant for large coastal developments in southern Spain.
Part of the wider Macenas resort redevelopment
The hotel will form part of the broader redevelopment of Macenas Mediterranean Resort, located on the coastline just south of Mojácar. The resort already includes the Macenas Club Social and a renewed 18-hole golf course, which together form the core of the destination’s leisure and tourism offer.
The operational structure of the hotel will involve the hospitality advisory and management company GMA Corporate, which specialises in hotel investment and asset management.
Rather than functioning as an isolated hotel, the project is intended to operate as part of a larger integrated resort concept combining accommodation, gastronomy, wellness facilities and outdoor activities connected to the surrounding coastline.
Why this matters for the local tourism economy
Large-scale hospitality investments can have an impact beyond the hotel itself. Developments of this size tend to increase the international visibility of a destination, attract higher-spending visitors and help extend tourism activity beyond the peak summer months.
For the Levante Almeriense area — which includes Mojácar, Garrucha and Vera — the arrival of an internationally recognised brand such as Hyatt can reinforce the region’s positioning as a more upscale coastal destination.
Local authorities and developers have also emphasised the project’s potential to generate employment and strengthen the tourism economy throughout the year rather than concentrating activity in the traditional summer season.
Signals for the property and investment market
In real estate markets, hotel investment often acts as a confidence indicator. When international hospitality brands commit to a location, it usually reflects long-term expectations about tourism demand, infrastructure development and destination positioning.
For surrounding residential markets — including Mojácar Playa, Vera Playa and neighbouring coastal zones — projects like this can gradually improve investor perception and increase interest from second-home buyers and international property investors.
That does not automatically translate into immediate price changes, but over time, the presence of internationally branded hospitality developments tends to strengthen the broader tourism ecosystem and the attractiveness of nearby residential property.
Looking ahead to 2028
The granting of the construction licence represents a key step for the Macenas project, which has been in various stages of planning and redevelopment for many years.
If construction proceeds on schedule, the new five-star Destination by Hyatt hotel could welcome its first guests in 2028, adding a new flagship hospitality asset to Mojácar’s coastline and reinforcing the long-term growth trajectory of tourism in eastern Almeria.
